Finally, I think I have figured out why my I could not load pictures to my blog for the past several months. I had to switch from Firefox to Chrome, which of course is the best, for blogging.

It's been a crazy month of May. We had to put our sweet little Louie kittie to sleep. He took sick all of a sudden and after two weeks of trying to make him better, we finally had to let him go. We are heartbroken and miss him so much. He just loved to be babied and we obliged him :) It's a very empty bed at night without him.

Then, May 2, I fell down the stairs and did my leg up but good...NOT!! I ended up with deep tissue/muscle and bone bruising. It's just been the past three days that I can stand on it again and quilt...so very frustrating.

And then, on May 14, my dearest and beloved Aunt Evelyn passed away. A month of tears it has been here but brighter days ahead. Does anyone have any sunshine they can send me???

God Bless and Happy Stitching :)Shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05479013420526089505noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247002100442065145.post-36485036365915605592014-04-07T12:16:00.000-04:002014-04-07T12:16:24.348-04:00Good WeatherIn the Maritimes, we have one sure way of knowing that spring has arrived. The temp is up to 44F, we have 6 foot snowbanks and people are wearing shorts! It's true lol :) And, I do have my shorts one, some windows open...still can't hang clothes on the clothesline yet cause the snow is still too high.

But now, I have Maxine's problem:) LOLOL

Happy stitching and God Bless! ..now where did I put those razors<img alt="Photo: Time to get out the hedge trimmers.
I put all the names of the commenters in a basket and hubby pulled the winner of the Notebook cover.

The wind is really fierce and being as we live in a heavily tree'ed province, it's not unusual for the trees or large branches to come down and take out power. SO, WE ARE GOING TO PRETEND THAT THIS IS THURSDAY, MARCH 27, MY DAY TO WAVE MY FLAG!
Of, course, for most everyone reading this, it is actually Thursday...hope you are not confused yet :)

Thanks so much to Ms. Thearica for hosting and cheering us on, and to Madame Samm for the blog hop idea. And a big round of applause for our Sponsors, Flags on a Stick, and Flag Outlet .

Here's my flag! I absolutely love it. I am and not ashamed to admit it lol! It turned out much better than I thought it would. It measures 12.5 x 18. My flag hanger is buried under 3 feet of snow so I had to lay it out on the floor :(

My back...some fabric that I had with quilting notions and words on it, and my hanging sleeve is there at the top but it is hard to see as it blends in.

A close up look...
My process....I knew from the first that I wanted my flag to represent the fact that I am a quilter and stitcher. I spent weeks just thinking how I could effectively do this, what elements were important enough to me to go on the flag, what kind of a look I wanted to go for...bright and cheery or country folkart; and finally, what would the final construction process be for joining the front and backing.

After several weeks of thinking and decision making, I knew four things: I wanted country colors, a spool block, a crow, and needle and thimble. Could I fit all these elements onto my flag?

Out comes the drafting paper:

I think I changed the shape and size of that spool block at least 4 times before it felt right. I let the sketch sit for a few weeks, coming back to it to see if I still liked it. Mentally, I re-arranged a few things.
Then, to start pulling fabrics to audition:

I knew I HAD to have red and that went into the spool. Funny enough, lots of blues here but they really didn't end up playing major parts in the design.
First, I made the spool block and attached it to the grass and flower bottom. Then as I started to place the applique elements around I realized that I wanted their placement different than my sketch. A girl has the right to change her mind, eh?! lol That's where the rick rack suddenly came into the picture. And this is Vintage Rick Rack...I collect them and even have a vintage Rick Rack Box to store them in.

Look at the price..29 cents!

To put my front and back together, I fell back on an old sewing staple from the "80's...see, there's no such thing as an outdated stash lol, eventually, you will find a use for it :) I used Pellon Heavy Duty Wonder Under Fusible to join the back and front of my flag. I wanted something really stiff so that the flag would have a better chance of staying down. I store my fusibles in plastic ziplock bags to keep them from drying out and pulling away from the paper. After fusing, I machine blanket stitched all around the outsides edges of my flag. I like it..I would do it again.

YES!! It's time to wave our flags, March 25 - April 3, with Madame Samm's "Flag on a Stick" blog hop, running from Sew We Quilt . We have the lovely Ms. Thearica from www.pigtalesandquilts.com as our wonderful hostess and she's been a trooper getting us participants on track:) Don't you love the name of her quilt site :) ...I can just imagine little piggies running in and around quilts hanging on the clothesline heehee...you MUST run over and visit her and then stop on over at Madame Samm's to see all the wonderful fun she has there.
"I just need a quilt, red with polka dots will do, oink oink :)"

March 27, Thursday, that's the day my flag will be waving and I am dancing around the sewing room with excitement. But please be sure to start hopping around tomorrow to see everyone's flag. I am sure there are going to be some wonderful ones and lots of inspiration for everyone!

Come back tomorrow to see the schedule for hopping!

God Bless and Happy Stitching!Shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05479013420526089505noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247002100442065145.post-79100177179116223012014-03-13T12:09:00.004-04:002014-03-13T12:11:23.706-04:00Aging Primitive--before and afterDug out another weed from the storage room to work on. I have had these handmade Prim Annie's for years..bought them at a sale for a song at $4.00 each, clothed...I know, they're naked here lol. The clothes I took apart to use as patterns for new clothes, more prim looking. The old clothes were poly and still have their nice bright color..not what my decor is now. The Annie's were too cute to toss and I've been wanting to age them, like, forever!
Here's before:

yech, too bright muslin..
Here's after:

Much better :) Now, I used the same solution on each Annie and can't for the life of me tell you why one turned tanner than the other but I like the looks of both. Now to sew clothes so the Annie sisters don't stay "nekked" as my three year old used to say lol

Outside my door today, yep, another blizzard...
I did all the wool applique and Janet did the sewing. It was fab fun working together on this project and we think it turned out perfect. Amanda loved it!!
Oh, the ideas bouncing around in my head the first two weeks. I finally have three ideas put down on paper, now which one to choose :)

Do you like designing? I lay awake at night with ideas and designs running through my head and I write most of them down but never seem to get bring any of them to fruition. Mostly because of time factors. Someday I will take the plunge and not work for a week so that I can spend all those days seeing what comes of my ideas. If you have ideas running around in your head, then Madam Samm provides stunning opportunities for you to show your stuff :) Run on over and see what's up and coming.

Been sick and stuff...hope to get back on track soon.

God Bless and Happy Stitching:)Shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05479013420526089505noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247002100442065145.post-16159976367937714512014-02-15T13:10:00.001-05:002014-02-15T13:10:41.277-05:00Addiction RealityWell, now that we've all survived the latest bouts of snow/ice storms...SNOW SNOW GO AWAY, COME AGAIN ANOTHER DAY OR MONTH OR YEAR, JUST GO AWAY! You know there's too much snow when the Canadians start complaining lol!

Do you ever acquire mini-addictions? Like you start on one little thing and the next time you look, you're making tons of them, right out of the blue, insanely, non-stop. Well, I was hit by a very serious addiction over the last three weeks. I can blame it on one of those weed projects, the one where I was weedin' out yarn to make chevron scarves for the school kids.

Well, before you could say Mary, Francis and John, there was I was having an out of body experience, standing in the yarn aisle at Michael's buying more yarn! BUYING! I mean it must have been an out of body experience (or was it an out of my head experience lol) because the whole weedin' idea is to clear it out not bring it in!

Yet, out I came with 6 more balls of yarn(I even clipped coupons on my out of body experience haha), three weeks flew by(time flies during addictions); and, next thing you know, I have these gorgeous beauties.

Hang on a sec, I need to grab a chocolate...you know, one of those lifetime addictions :)

Okay, so, crocheting has never been my forte, but I hooked out these scarves in no time. They fit so nicely around the neck :) Last night, I finished the last one, the purple one, put the hook down and said to myself ,"there, I think I got it outta my system". For the first time in many days, I don't have this overwhelming need to hook. Thank heavens, because I have begun hearing things...I think it's all that fabric and quilt projects crying out "what about me?" :) At least, I hope that's it lol
('nother chocolate ;),

We have three cats in this house, so, without a doubt, we have lots of cat hair. In an effort to at least provide a cat hair free surface to sit on for company, I keep quilts on my living furniture, you know the guest furniture. Well, what do you think this lump is????

and, under the lump, defeating my whole strategy:

"What, did you want something, I'm trying to sleep here".
BUSTED!
And BE CAREFUL! cause apparently, weedin' can lead to addictions lol :)

It's expected to hit here around 5 pm tonight with 12-15" of snow..just a spit for us lol. All of you stay safe and warm!

Well, after some serious computer cleaning and defragmenting, my pics are loading alot faster. Computers are like houses, if you don't clean and dust once in a while, things get all clogged up. I just know that I'm a happy blogger today :)

Another weed project left the store room. It all started with this sweet little pocket purse that I made for my niece's birthday in Jan. Then, I got to thinking, I know I have more of these already cut out somewhere and sure enough, a bag of weeds were found in the store room. So, that makes a total of 5 weeds removed. Don't worry though, there still lots more lol! This one I made for my niece..,love the fabrics, some that came from great friend :)

These will go into my "gift" trunk or as I like to call it (if you remember watching Mr. Dress-up as a kid) my Tickle Trunk.

And guess what, I missed my blogaversary in January! Gasp! that means we will have to celebrate sometime soon with a giveaway :)

To make the bookwork go down a little easier ;), I made these delicious Cinnamon Buns that Kaaren shared a few Sundays ago. Oh my goodness, they were so yummy and I'm not going to tell you how many I ate..more than two lol!

So here I am with all my buns, a cup of coffee and no company :(

Finally finished the 9 year sock project(another weed gone) and had enough yarn left to make a nice hot mat.

I haven't been able to blog much lately because I cannot get my pics to load!!!! I wait like 1/2 hour for them and I don't have that kind of time. I've done all the troubleshooting suggestions that blogger suggests, so today I am doing a full computer clean. I suspect that there are some un-needed add-ons and programs that have been downloaded by DS and I need to get him to go thru and remove them as he doesn't use this laptop anymore and I think they are not compatible with things I am trying to do. Hopefully, this will get fixed. Until then,

God Bless and Stay Warm lol
I think they have less snow at the north pole than we do here. I like snow, but really, this is beginning to get ridiculous lol.

Well, a new year is a good time to take an accounting of things in your life, of stuff you carry around emotionally, physically, and, wait for it.... the sewing/storage room. The other stuff usually takes care of itself in time but nothing changes in the "ROOM" until you physically go in there and do something about it. And mine, well.....it needed some weedin and since I don't garden (hubby does that task)it hasn't been weeded in a while. Have I mentioned I hate weedin. I'm not what you'd classify as a hoarder ..more like thrifty, may need that sometime, and I paid good $$ for that so I am obligated to save it until I use it lol!

This weedin started a few weeks ago with uncovering the yarn that I used up for the school scarves. The next buried project I will call the "nine year sock" :) notice I say sock..not socks lol.

I started to knit this sock NINE years ago when this fancy sock yarn come out. The first sock turned out to look like something that would fit an elephant's foot. frustrated, i threw it back in the bag and there is sat for 6 years. Then, two years later, feeling guilty of course, I dug it back out, unraveled it all and started again...with the correct size needles:) I knit enough to turn the heal and knit about 2 inches, then my wrists started bothering me, so i tossed it back into the bag and into storage room it went again. Two weeks ago, year nine, i dig it out, determined to conquer the beastly thing. After all, I couldn't throw it out..it had to be completed and that is exactly what i did. One sock down and the other one halfway done. Another UFO to mark off my list. Another weed out of the "Room". Thank heaven's my feet haven't grown any in nine years...just sayin.. ;) as other parts seem to have grown lol.

Now, confession time..I counted all my unquilted quilt tops and I have 35 of them...YEP..and I own a quilting machine LOL! I counted 5 projects that need to be finished, piecing wise. I did not count how many "want to do but not yet started" projects that are waiting in the wings...afterall, I didn't want scare myself.

And, this does not count the other, as yet uncovered things in the storage room that need to be used up...you know, like those old bottles that can be tinted for candles for your front yards and decks, and that pile of old hankies that I've been collecting to use "someday" in "something", the antique children's book with pictures so adorable they need to be printed onto fabric and made into a quilt, the metal sign that needs an old quilt piece glued to it so I can hang it as art.....well, YOU know :) This year is my year to conquer this stuff, to my weedin, one project at a time. Can anyone relate???

I did reduce the unquilted tops by one. This quilt hanging was a shared project by my mother and I. My mom does the most amazing embroidery work you will ever see. Think PROFESSIONAL quality! She did the stitching and I did the rest. Even put an antique button from grammie's button bag as the centre of one of the flowers. Now it's finished and when spring finally does arrive, up on the wall it will go :) Thanks Mom :)BTW, this project was ready to be quilted 5 years ago and, imagine, I still had fabric in my stash that matched to complete the binding! Now that's hoarding lol!

for those who commented on my last post, I apologize for not responding..problems with my blogger account and it is now fixed..crossing fingers.

I learned last year to crochet the zigzag afghan pattern from a friend and made a "hope chest" baby size one(that's in the "hope"that someday I have a grandbaby lol). Then last week, i was going thru my leftover yarns, not much mind you, and decided to use the pattern to make some scarves for the local school. the weather has been so cold and many kids come with not enough outdoor protection so the school is always thankful for donations of any kind. so, I whipped up several of them and the elementary teacher who lives next door to me was happy to have them. They only took a couple of evenings to keep my fingers busy and it was nice to get the yarn out of my stash and nice to know they were going where they were needed.

Don't know what to do with all those paperback novels after you've read them? We donate ours to the local cancer centre in our area, they are always looking for donations for the patients.

It is a blessing for me to be able to help out and I am thankful for the opportunity to do these two things. I encourage you all to take time today to think about how you could help out..I promise, you will be the one feeling blessed. And it doesn't have to be costly as you can see, I just used things that were hanging about my house unused anyways.

Happy Stitching and God Bless:)
And, you know, it still kind of boggles my mind.

I am hoping and praying that 2014 is going to be a much better year than 2013. It was such a sucky year that we aren't even going to discuss it or think about it. Upward and onward!

I hope this year will bring me more time to be set aside to piece and quilt for myself. Last year, I had chosen BALANCE as my word for the year...turns outs it should have been CHAOS.

I hope this year will bring more stability, more time with family, more time for blogging, more time for creating. I know that the time is there...I just need to manage it better.

I did get a very special wool project done over Christmas and placed on a very special hanger gifted to me by my sweet friend Connie. I absolutely fell in love with this project and the hanger when I saw it in the quilt shop. Rarely does something call my name so loudly that I can't get it out of my head because I want it so badly. Now it's finished and I just love love love it :)

This is a Jan. block from Lilyanna Stitches.com. It measures 7" x 8". The frame is a new mini size from Auckfield.

I added some extra stitches on his belly and jacket and an extra snowflake button on his hat. Can't wait to make a February one which I think I will design myself.
So, here's to a new year full of wonderful possibilities!
Thanks so much to fellow blogger Beatrice for tracking down a pattern for a pin cushion I had made quite a long time ago and posted on my blog. A while back, someone had sent me an email wanting to know where they could get the pattern. I couldn't reply..HEADS UP---if you want an answer you have to change your blogger setting from NO-REPLY. I couldn't find the pattern anyways, after several thorough hunts for it. Beatrice must have seen the question too and thoughtfully send me an email "reminding" me lol where it was located. I hope that "Sheila-quilter 47 sees this note too.

Here is the link to the Pincushion in question...it was fun to make and yes, I think I will make it again but this time using holly and berries :)

Again, kudos to Beatrice...you should receive blogger of the day :)
What do you mean you don't need my help putting the laundry away? You didn't even get your bed made this morning! Of course you need help! Seriously Grammie, you really need to think this helping thing over a bit.Shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05479013420526089505noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247002100442065145.post-122893485720653142013-05-16T15:13:00.001-04:002013-05-16T15:13:36.110-04:00Wool Needlecases

We are having our first thunderstorms of the season this afternoon, so I guess we can say spring is finally here. We have a little covered deck off our kitchen that I love to sit out on in the afternoons and rock. I can look up the river valley and see the storm coming. I love watching the lightening and smelling the rain on the air. We live at one of the highest points in our area and we can see storms for miles around.

This week must be wool week for me because I also finished up these 6 wool needlecases with appliqued coneflowers on them. An old pattern from years ago in an American Patchwork and Quilting mag. I had prepped them to work on two summer's ago when Mr. RQ was taking his treatments but just couldn't get my head or hands wrapped around them back them. They've been starving for attention in a bag, you all know how that is lol, ever since and this week, all inspired by having finished my rabbits, I grabbed the bag and finished them up. It felt really good to get them out of that bag :)

Working on finishing up one more unfinished wool project and then guess what! I can start a new one lol!

Happy stitching and God Bless!Shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05479013420526089505noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247002100442065145.post-47145694639712111862013-05-16T08:38:00.001-04:002013-05-16T08:38:51.090-04:00Rabbits Everywhere!I can't believe it! I can hardly breathe with the excitement :) This week I finally put the last stitches on my Harrington and Hannah blocks from Michelle's Raspberry Rabbits. I never thought it would take this long but you know how it is. Life happens and interrupts important stitching time and then one must ...work...to support one's stitching <strike>addictions</strike> habits lol!

Anyway, here are the last blocks, all stitched and now I have to come up with a layout plan. I have buttons and beads and such to add to the blocks yet but can't do that until the quilting is done. I did make some changes to some of the blocks too but just little ones. I'm sure Michelle won't mind that her designs inspired me to explore my creativity on some of the blocks:)
My blog is meant to be uplifting, inspiring and hopefully, sometimes funny. But this issue has reached it's limit and I will speak out to the bullies.

I simply cannot believe the nasty comments I'm still getting over re-purposing my treadle machine! Especially from the gutless commenters who write under anonymous or have their account set to No-reply. Easy to throw dirt when you can't get it back, right! So I have one big thing to say....<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">GET OVER IT!! It was MY machine, to do with as I like. I did not go to my local sewing machine store to find parts..see, I'm not stupid. I researched and found a Raymond part supplier. I KNOW it was a famous brand made in Canada! Apparently alot of you can't read because I never said any of those things in my post! Parts were available, It was NOT about $$. After speaking with a RAYMOND restorer, it was clear the sewing machine itself could not be fixed...BECAUSE A MAJOR PIECE THAT WAS CAST IRON THAT HELD PIECES IN PLACE WAS RUSTED AND GONE, NOT REPLACEABLE!!!! So please, as my grandmother and mother taught me, if you can't say something nice, then SHUT UP! And yes, before anyone says it, I can accept comments with critiques. But I will not accept name calling and bullying and nastiness!
Enough is enough! Leave it alone already! Spring didn't arrive in our neighbourhood today....no, we got 18" of snow and it's still falling heavily. I'm jealous of those of you who have spring blooms coming up :) I had to make a disappearing 4 patch for guild last month, so I decided on a baby quilt in '30s fabrics. I love the pop of solid orange around the blocks. I used 6 1/2" squares to start my 4 patches. It'll be for my hope chest....in hopes that one day I'll have some lovely grandchildren....(no pressure boys lol!) I just want to be prepared :)
How do you like my new little storage bin? I had seen a similar one on facebook, can't remember where, and roughly sketched out the design so Mr. RQ could make me one. Oh, and the handle, a spindle from an old stairway railing that we salvaged from a house that was being torn down..imagine that, another re-purposed item lol!
I had the pleasure of quilting this customer's lovely jelly race quilt. I love her fabric choices and the variety. It's not quite as "blended" a look as some of them have, like mine.
The kitties are growing like crazy. Lou, the long haired, is 8 months old now and the tortoiseshell, Liara, is just a tiny little girl for 9 months. They are so funny and keep us laughing every day. Laughing everyday is certainly good for the soul and keeps you young :)
I've been wanting to show you all some of the fun I had before Christmas working on wool things. I don't know which I enjoyed more...the pennies or the stockings. I have to get working on some more for little gifties.

Sorry to my followers that you had to read some nasty stuff yesterday.

God Bless and Happy Stitching!Shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05479013420526089505noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247002100442065145.post-44450769537777066282013-03-19T16:01:00.001-04:002013-04-22T14:24:16.409-04:00Re-purposing #2OUCH!
Let's get one thing straight...I did not just hack into and chop up a vintage treadle just for the fun of it. This was not a decision I made lightly. I did do my research, get repair quotes and looked into having it restored. I totally respect the integrity of a vintage anything! I collect vintage! I love my 1932 Singer Featherweight that does work! I, in no way, encourage anyone to tear apart a working treadle or one that can be repaired and used!!!

Not that I hold any responsibility to any one for my choice, I will state that the inside of the machine itself was so rusted out that you couldn't even PUT IN replacement parts. Believe me, if I could have gotten this machine up and running I would have because I would have LOVED to learn how to use my grandmother's treadle! To put my hands where hers had been, to have been able to make that connection with her!

And, even though it would never sew again, it held a lot of sentimental value to my family. So, I thought and thought and decided to do what we did. I am now able to share a physical piece of my family history with other members of my family. And these items will continue to be passed down thru the family in a useful way.

The whole purpose of my post was just to show how to use a machine that could not be returned to working condition. How to still save it and it's memories. That's what the whole post was about---preserving memories the best way I could

Respectfully,Shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05479013420526089505noreply@blogger.com9
